A “Sound Investment” for Home DIYers

Posted on May 23, 2024

When homeowners look to increase the long-term value of their property, they may welcome a quick DIY project that can dramatically and cost effectively cut outside noise intrusion while improving their comfort and peace of mind before sweltering summer heat, winter chills, and high energy bills hit again.

Although homeowners often turn to costly, disruptive window replacement projects involving contractors to handle such concerns, DIYers have another faster, more economic option that can significantly improve their property value. The approach adds an inner soundproof window to any existing window that significantly cuts intrusive noise and energy bills. The DIY project – which involves no demolition or mess and can take less than one hour per window to install – augments home value and comfort for many years.

“Soundproof” windows that eliminate up to 95% of exterior noise can be installed without replacing existing windows for roughly the same cost or less. The approach brings peace and quiet to homes near roads, highways, and urban/suburban sprawl.

“A soundproof window is a second professionally engineered window placed inside the existing window, with an appropriate air gap and long-lasting seals, that can open and close just like the existing one,” says Randy Brown, President of Soundproof Windows, Inc., a national manufacturer of window and patio door soundproofing products that has refined its technology from working with sound recording studios over decades.

According to Brown, a soundproof window can greatly reduce the intrusion of outside noise, effectively doubling a single pane window Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating from 26-28 to 48-54. This far surpasses a double-pane window’s STC Rating of 26-32.

Because no window replacement is required, the installation can take less than one hour per window while minimizing mess and disruption. Qualified contractors and even handy DIYers can install soundproof windows where necessary, providing considerable savings versus traditional window replacement.

The soundproof windows also enhance home comfort and energy savings with extra thermal insulation, which can help to further increase property value.

The new inner window provides an additional layer of insulation resulting in better values than the best low-e, argon gas filled dual pane window. This can reduce heat loss by 77% or more and can reduce the heating-cooling portion of energy bills by 15-30%.

With added insulation and better seals, the windows can also help to prevent cold drafts from entering even when it is windy outside, which makes homes more comfortable.

Whether DIYers are looking to soundproof a single window by a noisy street or convert many windows in a more ambitious plan, each “bite sized” project will improve peace, quiet, sleep, and comfort at home with added thermal insulation.

The net effect will reduce energy costs and increase overall home value for years and years as a lasting improvement that friends and family will appreciate.
