Wi-Fi Connected Water Detectors: An Effective Solution in Fight to Minimize Residential Property Water Damage

Posted on July 17, 2024

For residential property managers, damage caused by water leaks or floods in the household has reached virtually epidemic levels. According to an article posted on the Consumer Affairs Journal of Consumer Research website, almost 24% of all U.S. household insurance claims were related to water damage, with the average claim exceeding $12,500. Overall, water damage claims cost insurers approximately $13 billion per year.

Whether a continuous drip or a sudden flood, water leaks can come from a myriad of locations within apartments, rental homes, condos, and townhouses, such as sinks, faucets, toilets, tubs, showers, washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, water heaters, pumps, and fish tanks. Storms, foundation cracks, and roofing/gutter failures can also cause unanticipated leaks and flooding. Basements are particularly vulnerable.

Depending on the extent and flow of the leak, the costs of a property’s water damage from common sources can be devastating in terms of building material replacement, remediation, disruption, and loss of revenue. When toxic mold results from extended wet conditions, the time and cost required for remediation can quickly multiply.

Fortunately, a leading detector manufacturer, Zircon Corporation, has designed and developed a family of water detectors that are simple, reliable, and effective for residential property managers.

Zircon’s Leak Alert™ X smart water detector and Leak Alert™ Wi-Fi devices provide audible, visual, and email alerts when water is detected, warning users of a potential leak. Powered by a 3V lithium battery, these Wi-Fi water detectors eliminate the need for a separate hub.

Since each water detector operates independently and is individually named during the setup process, a comprehensive solution can be created by placing a multitude of detectors throughout the property, or multiple properties. Configuration is simple and can be accomplished in a matter of minutes, connecting each detector to Wi-Fi, and then entering the detector location and contact information.

Early leak detection through inexpensive and easy to use water detection devices is a practical solution for local and remote alerts, minimizing the extent of damage, and providing early warning.
