Smoking at Home is Made More Enjoyable with “Smoke Eaters”

Posted on November 18, 2022

Using a commercial-grade air purifier indoors removes accumulated smoke and odor so subtle flavors can be relished and everyone is more comfortable

Whether it’s called a cigar room, smoking room, game room, or man cave, having a designated, well-appointed area of the home to leisurely smoke with friends and pass the time is important in today’s high stress world. It is not only vital to have a space to truly relax and unwind with a good smoke, but also can be essential to keeping the peace at home when the household also includes non-smokers.

However, having too much accumulated smoke in the air can become a problem for anyone who enjoys smoking fine cigars, tobacco, or vaping products at home in solitude, with friends, or even wants to host a smoking club.

Opening windows can help for ventilation but is often insufficient by itself. Opening the door of a man cave will only spread smoke throughout the home, bothering non-smokers, and can diminish any sense of privacy. Without an effective solution, smokers and their visitors often find themselves “invited” to go outside and smoke, away from the comforts of home. Left unresolved, sitting in a cloud of dense smoke can also compromise the enjoyment of the smoker and detract from the quality of a brand.

Among cigar afficionados, one increasingly popular life hack is to install “smoke eaters,” advanced air purification systems that filter large volumes of air quietly to remove both smoke and odors at home. In doing so, smokers can not only keep the non-smokers at home happy but also savor subtle nuances in the cigar/tobacco product, enhancing their pleasure.

Maximizing Pleasure

At home, cleaner air allows smokers to enjoy a fine cigar more fully. Every tobacco product has its own complex mix of body, flavor, and strength. Cigars, of course, are purchased at many different price points.

“Higher priced cigars are usually better constructed with subtleties in flavor, fuller body, and a consistent strength. Clean, odor-free air allows the qualities to be fully appreciated. However, all cigars are essentially reduced to the same level if there is a cloud of intermingled smoke among a group of smokers,” says Randolph Bush, owner and President of LakeAir, a Racine, WI based manufacturer of commercial and residential air filtration systems since 1968.

Clearing the air of smoke can help smokers appreciate the subtleties of a specialty cigar’s smell and taste, such as hints of cherry, vanilla, coffee, or mint. Failing this, accumulated smoke can overpower the senses.

To improve the experience of smoking at home, a growing number of cigar smokers are purifying the air with advanced “smoke eater” air filtration. Some smokers are opting for compact, commercial grade versions that are particularly effective at removing smoke and odor in the home.

According to Bush, one compact electrostatic smoke eater, called the Max-700 750 CFM, is a top seller. The unit removes more cubic feet per minute (CFM) of smoke filled air than any other air purifier on the residential market today. By comparison, most conventional options for homes can only remove smoke from a maximum of 400-500 CFM.

“The most popular home units offer ten smoke eating air changes per hour in a 600 sq. ft. area or six air changes per hour in a 1000 sq. ft. area. The units do double duty by removing smoke odor as well, so it does not remain in home furnishings,” says Bush. He notes that smokers usually choose among tabletop, wall or floor mounted units, whichever best suits their needs and home layout.

Each unit is a dual blower electrostatic air purifier paired with an activated carbon filter that provides smoke and odor control with 97% efficient air filtration down to 0.1 micron.

Electrostatic air purification is a 2-stage filtration system. In the first stage, the smoky air is drawn through the particle ionizer. Here, the smoke in the air is given a negative charge. The second stage is a series of collection plates. The charged smoke particles are attracted to the plates and are trapped. The smoke remains on the filter plates until they are removed when the filter is washed.

The activated carbon filter traps any remaining smoke particles as well as odor molecules by adsorption inside the pore structure of the carbon substrate. After passing through the smoke eater filtration systems, purified air flows back out into the indoor area.

One added benefit of the high volume air exchange and filtration is that the process also helps to trap airborne dust, allergens, and indoor pollutants. This helps cigar smokers breathe easier as well.

Compared to traditional home filtration options, the advanced air purifiers also provide a rather unique aspect: their variable speed capability helps cigar smokers easily adjust to the number of people smoking inside their home.

One other aspect that many smokers appreciate is that the air filtration units are made in America with heavy-duty, all-steel construction for durability.

As both men and women seek to increase the pleasure of smoking fine brands of cigars and other tobacco products at home with friends, the use of commercial grade, smoke eater air purification systems will only become more common in dens, living rooms, and man caves.

One of the greatest benefits of using a smoke eater is to keep harmony in the house with non-smokers.
